A Modern and Contemporary 미술 대가 Who Established Fairy-Tale Realism
화가 Yeosan 黎山 Yang Dal-seok 1908–1984 was born in Seongnae 마을, Sadeung-myeon, Geoje-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. He is recognized in the Korean modern and contemporary Western 미술 장면 as the 화가 of innocence and a representative artist of pastoral landscapes.
After completing his studies at the Imperial Art 학교 in Japan, he participated in numerous solo and group 전시회. This exhibition will feature approximately 40 oil landscape 그림, portraits, and watercolors, including pieces from the collections of Haejo Eum 박물관 and Yang Dal-seok 박물관.
In particular, this exhibition offers a rare 기회 to view 작품 that were loaned to the National 박물관 of Modern and Contemporary 미술, Deoksugung, for the 80th Anniversary of Liberation exhibition Nostalgia: Yearning for Home, and to the Busan Art Associations Busan Misuhyeop 80th Anniversary Special Exhibition 80 Years of Breath! A Pastoral 세계 of Harmony Between Humans and 자연, Purity, and Hope
Lim Ho-geon, 관장 of Haejo Eum 박물관, explained that 화가 Yang Dal-seok used the rural 풍경 of his 고향 Geoje, along with 소, shepherds, and 아이들, as main subjects to depict a peaceful 세계 where humans and 자연 coexist harmoniously. The artist sublimated the suffering of reality into warm and pure images of childlike innocence, drawing from memories of his impoverished and arduous childhood.
His 작품 are characterized by simplified forms and soft 색채, conveying comfort and 감동 to the viewer. The recurring appearance of 소 and 아이들 in his 그림 carries symbolic meanings related to labor and life, hope and the future. This represents a pastoral 세계 that transcends simple rural landscapes, expressing innate human purity and a yearning for an ideal life.
A 큐레이터s 관점: Reflecting the Will to Overcome Personal Suffering and Contemporary Reality
Ham Ui-jeong, 큐레이터 at Gallery 미술관 Ph.D. in Literature, defined Yang Dal-seoks artistic 세계 as pastoral utopian 그림 that portrays human purity and hope through rural themes and childlike innocence. She emphasized that behind this artistic 세계 lies the artists will to overcome personal suffering and contemporary reality.
큐레이터 Ham added that 관람객 can enjoy art 관광 in Geoje-si, a maritime cultural 관광 도시, through various 전시회, including the special exhibition 섬, The Way of Love an installation art exhibition at Gallery Yesulsum Hall 1, and the upcoming joint exhibition with Haejo Eum 박물관, Light, Color, Line, Love – Four Honam Masters Oh Ji-ho, Lim Jik-sun, Bae Dong-shin, Son Sang-gi.
This special 전시회 offers a valuable 기회 to reflect on the depth and meaning of Korean modern and contemporary 미술 through the 작품 of a 대가 from Geoje 섬. 관람객 are expected to experience comfort and emotion in the peaceful and pure pastoral 세계 depicted by 화가 Yang Dal-seok.
