The 23rd Seoul International Environmental 영화제, hosted by the Korea Green Foundation, successfully concluded its run from June 5, World 환경 Day, to its 시상식 on June 7. This year, the 축제 notably addressed the timely issue of 인공지능's (AI) 환경 책임, providing audiences with profound 기회 for 성찰. A total of six impactful 작품 received accolades in the 한국경쟁 and 국제경쟁 sections.
Successful Opening and Questions for the AI Era
On June 5, the 23rd Seoul International Environmental 영화제 grandly opened its doors at Seoul's Lotte Concert Hall, welcoming 1,433 명. The event saw the participation of key figures from the 문화예술계, including 조직위원장 Choi Yul, 공동집행위원장 Jung Jae-seung and Lee Mi-kyung, and 공식 'Eco-Friends' 홍보대사, singers Bada and Yoon Do-hyun. They gathered to celebrate the 축제's commitment to a sustainable 미래 amidst the 기후위기.
This year's 개막작 was the 장편 documentary 'AI: I Am a Doomer Optimist,' directed by Daniel Rohr and Charlie Tyrell. The 작품, which has also been 공식 invited to the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, offers an in-depth look at the 가능성 and 위험 of AI 기술. It achieves this by featuring interviews with prominent leaders and experts in the AI 산업, such as Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, and Geoffrey Hinton. The documentary profoundly explores the 사회적 transformations and 환경 책임 that AI will bring, presenting a significant 질문 about 인류's 선택 in the AI 시대, resonating deeply with the 관객. 공동집행위원장 Lee Mi-kyung remarked, 'Just as quickly as AI changes our 일상, it is equally crucial that we consider its 환경 책임.' She expressed her hope that the 축제 would serve as an 기회 for 'all of us living in the AI 시대 to reflect on the 선택 we will make.'
Award Winners in Korean and International Competitions
At the 시상식 held on June 7 at KT&G Sangsangmadang, the 축제 announced a total of six 수상작 across its 한국경쟁 and 국제경쟁 부문, distributing a 총상금 of 26 million won. This initiative underscores the 축제's dedication to elevating the 가치 of 환경 cinema and fostering greater public interest in 환경 문제.
The 대상 in the 한국경쟁 was awarded to 감독 Wang Min-cheol's 'A Place Where We Stay for a While.' The 작품 tells the poignant story of captive bears, who have spent their 평생 in 철창 barely one pyeong in size, and the four 여성 who dedicate themselves to their welfare. It earned the 심사위원단's 찬사 for its 심도 exploration of the 의미 of a life committed to 생명체 seemingly unrelated to one's own. The 우수상 was 공동 presented to 'Jeongbaengi,' a documentary by 감독 Oh Jeong-hoon depicting the 회복 of a village 공동체 submerged by 폭우, and 'Som-som-ok-su,' an 실험 film by 감독 Lee Eun-hee addressing 산업재해. The 관객심사단상 went to 'Counting Carbon,' which delves into 탄소 측정—a 핵심 tool for 기후위기 대응—as both a 과학 and 정치적 행위. Accepting the 대상, 감독 Wang Min-cheol stated, 'This 작품 is about 여성 who willingly undertake 과제 that may not directly concern them.' He added, 'There are still over 200 bears on 농장, awaiting a place to go. I hope this 수상 provides a small source of strength to those quietly continuing their 활동 in the 현장.'
In the 국제경쟁 부문, 감독 Elinor Mortimer's 'How Deep Is Love' secured the 대상. The 작품 explores the 여정 of scientists studying remarkable 생명체 in the 심해—지구's last 미지 frontier—while 동시에 highlighting the 생태계 파괴 threatened by the escalating competition for 해저 자원 채굴. The 심사위원단 특별상 was awarded to 'The Mysterious Ornithology,' by 감독 Jeremy Seifert and Benjamin James Roberts. This 작품 poetically captures the 교감 between 조류학자 J. Drew Lanham, who lives on a South Carolina 농장, and migratory birds.
The Environmental Film Festival Journey Continues Until June 30
Following the 시상식, the Seoul International Environmental 영화제 extends its 축제 spirit with a diverse range of programs until June 30. 핵심 상영 are available for 무료 viewing on the 공식 website and B tv. Additionally, a variety of engaging offline 활동 have been organized for 공개 참여. Notably, the 'Earth We Pet Family Festival,' an 야외상영회 event for 반려동물 and their owners held on June 14 at Yongma Waterfall Park, garnered an overwhelming 호응 with over 10,000 신청 인원. Furthermore, the 'Seoul International Environmental Film Festival IN' 공동 상영 지원 프로그램 continues to bring 환경 작품 to audiences 전국.
교육 프로그램 for 미래 세대 are also actively underway. On June 13, the '세계청소년기후포럼' took place at Lotte Cinema World Tower, where 청소년 from 국내외 directly proposed 기후위기 대응 정책 and 실천적 방안. Concurrently, 'Cinema Green Teen,' a tailored 환경 교육 프로그램 for 어린이 and 청소년, was implemented in 학교 across the 전국 during the 축제 기간, significantly contributing to fostering 환경 의식. 조직위원장 Choi Yul emphasized, 'As responding to the 기후위기 has become a 전 지구적 과제, film serves as a powerful 매개, transcending 국경 and 언어, to communicate with the largest number of 명.' He articulated SIEFF's 포부 to 'establish itself as a platform for disseminating 환경 담론 and driving 실천적 변화.'
