Ensemble Fernweh: Meaning and Artistic Journey

The chamber music concert, hosted by Ensemble Fernweh and organized by Hyundai Culture Planning, will take place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 7 PM at the JCC Art Center Concert Hall in Seoul. This performance will offer audiences a profound musical experience through a special program that blends German Romanticism with the elegance of French music.

The ensemble's name, 'Fernweh,' is a German word signifying 'a longing for distant places' or 'the desire to travel.' This deeply reflects the group's ethos: young musicians from diverse backgrounds and experiences coming together through the universal language of music to embark on a new artistic journey.

Concert Program: The Essence of Romanticism and French Music

The concert will open with French composer Philippe Gaubert's 'Madrigal pour flûte et piano' (Madrigal for Flute and Piano). The elegant and lyrical melodies created by the flute and piano will showcase the delicate and beautiful coloration characteristic of French music, setting the stage for the performance.

Following this, Carl Maria von Weber's 'Trio for Piano, Flute and Cello in G minor, Op. 63' will be performed. This piece, uniquely scored for flute, cello, and piano, features each instrument playing an equally vital role. It is considered a quintessential chamber work that fully displays the free imagination and brilliant virtuosity of early Romanticism.

The second half of the concert will feature Felix Mendelssohn's masterpiece, 'Piano Trio No. 1 in D minor, Op. 49.' Praised by Schumann as 'the greatest piano trio of its time,' this work is renowned for its perfect harmony of rich lyricism and dynamic energy, remaining one of the most beloved chamber pieces to this day.

The stage will feature flutist Lee Ji-an, violinist Cho Min-jung, cellist Han Se-ik, and pianist Lee Gyu-ho, each showcasing their accumulated skills. These four young musicians, active in various performances, aim to convey profound musical rapport and the intimate ensemble synergy characteristic of chamber music to the audience during this concert.

Pianist Lee Gyu-ho, a member of Ensemble Fernweh, stated, 'This concert was planned to share the joy of music created collectively by musicians, and the true charm of chamber music, rather than focusing on dazzling solo performances.' He added, 'We hope it will be a time for audiences to feel the true beauty of ensemble playing as different instruments blend into a single musical expression.'

Tickets for Ensemble Fernweh's chamber music concert are priced at 5,000 won for all seats and can be conveniently booked through Naver and Yes24.
