This year's event held special significance as it marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of Kim Gu, a revered independence activist. The gathering of young talents at Sungui Women's University, a place imbued with the spirit of the independence movement, echoed Kim Gu's vision of a nation powered by "high cultural strength." The ceremony was also graced by representatives from major cultural and arts organizations, including the Korea Theater Association and the Seoul Theater Association, as well as sponsors such as the Seoul Cultural Foundation and Woori Bank.

He also announced a groundbreaking initiative: the Korea Theater Association would provide overseas training opportunities for outstanding student participants, an announcement that received enthusiastic applause. Kim Hana, a professor at Sungui Women's University and the general director of the opening ceremony, highlighted her intention to create a harmonious stage where all participants could join, rather than just limiting the event to VIP speeches.

Cultivating Future Talent: A Platform for Exchange and Growth

The Young Theater Festival stands as a true celebration of youth theater, jointly hosted by the Korea University Theater Department Professors' Council (led by Chairman Kim Hyun-hee of Sungkyunkwan University) and organized by the YTF Executive Committee (led by Chairman Kim Jeong-geun of Daekyeung University). With 51 universities participating, a total of 64 performances will be presented until July 5, offering a valuable opportunity for young talents destined to lead the future of Korean theater to showcase their skills and connect with peers.

Executive Committee Chairman Kim Jeong-geun (Daekyeung University) remarked on the consistently fresh inspiration derived from students' energy. He emphasized his commitment to thoroughly consider the students' perspectives to fully capture their passion and foster a more meaningful environment for exchange. Beyond merely staging performances, the Young Theater Festival aims to lay the groundwork for participants to grow and develop as theater professionals.

Diverse Programs and Engagement Opportunities Enrich Festival Experience

Running until July 5, the festival comprises eight distinct sections, promising a rich array of attractions for audiences. Highlights include "YTF FOCUS," which spotlights Chinese plays in celebration of the "Year of Cultural Exchange between Korea, China, and Japan." "YTF CLASSIC" offers rare opportunities to experience masterpieces by legendary playwrights such as Shakespeare, Chekhov, and Brecht, while "YTF PROJECT" showcases innovative 15-minute relay performances.

In addition to the main performances, the Young Theater Festival also features various side events designed to foster interaction among theater artists and contribute to social good. The "Korea-China-Japan University Theater Networking Reception" facilitates international exchange with participating teams from Japan and China. Furthermore, the "Running & Plogging Donation Challenge" combines physical activity with social contribution, linking it to arts philanthropy. An academic seminar titled "Living Body on Stage" provides an in-depth exploration of theater theory and practice, focusing on stage-centric skills.
