This flagship program supports young artists in Gugak (Korean traditional music), focusing on discovering and nurturing those who combine contemporary sensibilities with traditional arts to forge their unique creative expressions. This year, an expanded lineup of five teams will present original performances, exploring fresh possibilities within Gugak.

The 'Young Gugak Danjang' Showcase: Fostering the Future of Korean Traditional Music

Seoul Namsan Gugakdang will present the "2026 Young Gugak Danjang Showcase," a creative support program for young artists, on May 23 at 3 PM at Crown Haitai Hall. This signature event by Seoul Namsan Gugakdang aims to discover and support emerging artists who possess a contemporary sense and their own creative language rooted in traditional arts. More than just offering production support, the program operates by collaborating with young artists throughout the entire creative process, allowing them to freely experiment and develop their artistic visions within the realm of Gugak.

This year's showcase features five teams of young artists, selected through a rigorous application and evaluation process. Each team will present its unique exploration of new possibilities within traditional forms. Notably, considering the diverse creative potential and artistic completeness of the submissions, one additional team has been selected this year, bringing the total to five. This expansion promises an even richer and more varied program.

Five Teams Offer Diverse Interpretations of Tradition

The showcase opens with Piri Band Zircle's "New Brass Breath." This performance combines the powerful breath and energy of traditional Korean wind instruments like piri, jeopiri, and daepiri with modern band sounds such as rock, reggae, and funk, creating Zircle's unique Korean-style brass band music. Following this, creative artist Onuel presents "We All Live That Way," a piece rooted in minyo (folk songs) and pansori (traditional narrative singing). It vocalizes the concerns and emotions of people living in contemporary society, weaving "the story of us all" onto the stage with relatable lyrics and catchy melodies.

The third performance is Park Yoon-ji's "Maek (Pulse) – for Piano & Large Drum." This piece explores the texture of time created by the seemingly disparate instruments, piano and drum, dimensionally unfolding sensations of flow, repetition, tension, and balance. It distinctively renders a multi-layered sense of time through the interplay of these two instruments. Next, Kim Sung-eui's "The Art of Growth RE:GROW" takes the stage. This dance drama metaphorically expresses the growth process of plants as a reflection of human life and development. It conveys the message "Growth is an art" through dance and sound, depicting the processes of rooting, swaying, and rising again.

Finally, Yoon Hee-yeon's "I. Am" creates a new musical narrative by utilizing the geomungo (a traditional Korean zither) not merely as an instrument, but as the core of emotion and storytelling, infused with traditional depth, contemporary sensibility, and theatrical imagination. The approximately 150-minute showcase will be emceed by Song Hyun-min, a music critic and editor-in-chief of Monthly Gaeksuk. He will guide the audience through the organic flow between the works and share the creative stories of the young artists.

Showcase as a Stepping Stone to Mainstage Performances

This showcase is designed as a crucial intermediate step, extending beyond a simple presentation to serve as a pathway to full-scale productions. On the day of the performance, both expert evaluations and audience assessments will take place. The two ultimately selected teams will earn the opportunity to present more developed versions of their works on the Seoul Namsan Gugakdang main stage in August. This mechanism is intended to provide substantial momentum for the creative endeavors of young artists.

Seoul Namsan Gugakdang emphasized that the "Young Gugak Danjang" program values the collaborative process of creating alongside young artists, offering them time for creation and boundless possibilities, rather than simply demanding finished products. They stated that the showcase will provide an opportunity to directly experience the dynamic performances of young artists who interpret and express tradition with the most contemporary sensibilities.

The "2026 Young Gugak Danjang Showcase" is highly anticipated as a significant event that will shed new light on tradition and suggest future directions for Gugak. This stage, where audiences can directly witness the passion and innovative attempts of young artists, promises to offer a fresh perspective on Korean traditional music. All seats for the showcase are free, and attendees are encouraged to experience the vibrant energy of young Gugak.

English-Korean Version

Seoul Namsan Gugakdang to Host '2026 Young Gugak Danjang Showcase' on May 23, Highlighting Emerging Talent in Traditional Korean Music…

[4
1032,948,1029,657,1030,1031,658,1028
post-842","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-culture","tag-crown-haitai-hall","tag-gugak","tag-korean-traditional-music","tag-seoul-namsan-gugakdang","tag-showcase","tag-traditional-arts","tag-young-artists","tag-young-gugak-danjang
["GET
