A Musical 'Gongnyeok' Forged Through Dedication
가야금 연주자 Seo Eun-young will present her fifth solo 독주회, 'Gongnyeok (功力) V,' on Tuesday, June 30, at 7:30 PM at the Umyeon Hall of the 국립국악원. This 공연 will prominently feature the complete 'Lee Tae-baek-ryu 철가야금산조,' which Master Lee Tae-baek (a 교수 at Mokwon University) has refined throughout his 평생. The 공연 marks another step in Seo Eun-young's 예술적 행보, which she has quietly expanded over many years.
The title of the 독주회, 'Gongnyeok (功力),' signifies the power of accumulated 공부 and effort gained through long 수련. Following her 'Seong-eum-ji-gyo' series, which explored the 음의 조화, Seo Eun-young has continued her 예술적 행보 of deepening her craft through the 'Gongnyeok' series. She has performed and made 음반 of various 산조 유파, including those of the Sin Gwan-yong, Han Sook-gu, and Kim Juk-pa schools. With this fifth 공연, she further broadens her 음악적 지평 by delving into the new realm of 철현.
The Aesthetics of Namdo Sanjo on the Cheol-gayageum
At this 독주회, Seo Eun-young will perform 'Lee Tae-baek-ryu 철가야금산조' on a 철가야금, which features thin 금속현 instead of the usual silk strings. Unlike the softer 산조 가야금, the 철가야금 possesses a cool and firm 음색. However, through deep 농현, it can produce the warm and rich 성음 characteristic of 남도 음악. Since the winter of 2024, Seo has dedicated herself to mastering this 악기 and the Lee Tae-baek-ryu 산조, exploring the deep 성음 and sikimsae (ornamentation) of 남도 melodies.
산조 is a 전통 한국 instrumental solo developed by combining elements of shamanic 음악, sinawi (improvisational ensemble music), and pansori (narrative singing). It is characterized by its progression from slow to gradually faster rhythmic patterns. The 'Lee Tae-baek-ryu 철가야금산조,' central to this 공연, was conceived and refined over 20 years by Master Lee Tae-baek, who hails from 남도 and has deeply internalized 남도 음악 전통. Master Lee did not merely adapt 기존 산조 for 철현; he sought to imbue each note with subtle 감정.
Master and Disciple: Enhancing Namdo Music's Depth
The 독주회 will feature the complete 'Lee Tae-baek-ryu 철가야금산조,' performed sequentially through various rhythmic 장단: Daseureum, Jinyangjo, Jungmori, Gutgeori, Eotmori, Jajinmori, Hwimori, and Semachi. The unique rhythmic structure, particularly encompassing Gutgeori, Eotmori, and Semachi, will vividly express the distinct 색채 of 남도 음악, promising a deeply 감동적인 experience for the 청중.
On 무대, Master Lee Tae-baek, the creator of this 산조 유파, will accompany Seo Eun-young on the 장구. This collaboration between master and disciple transcends a mere 공연, adding significant 의미 to the 계승과 발전 of 전통 음악, and is expected to resonate deeply with all present.
