The 23rd Seoul International Eco Film Festival (SIEFF) successfully hosted its outdoor event, 'Green Cinema Picnic,' on June 23 at Yeouido Hangang Park. Held in collaboration with eco-lifestyle brand BEYOND at the park's Water Light Stage plaza, the picnic, themed 'The Slowest Picnic in Yeouido Hangang Park this Summer,' offered a unique urban experience that harmonized film, music, and eco-friendly activities.
Environmental Awareness Meets Culture at Hangang Park
The Environmental Foundation-hosted 23rd Seoul International Eco Film Festival (SIEFF) successfully concluded its 'Green Cinema Picnic' on June 23. This outdoor event, held at the plaza in front of the Water Light Stage in Yeouido Hangang Park in collaboration with eco-lifestyle brand BEYOND, drew numerous citizens with its blend of film, music, and various eco-friendly activities in a city picnic format.
Attendees relaxed on the grass, enjoying a diverse program that underscored the importance of environmental preservation. The event was specifically designed to offer a natural experience of sustainable living, fostering greater public understanding and empathy for environmental issues.
Interactive Booths Promote Sustainable Lifestyles
Through its partnership with BEYOND, SIEFF presented interactive content designed to allow participants to experience sustainable lifestyles firsthand. One popular activity was the 'BEYOND Signature Sachet Making' experience, where attendees created their own scented sachets. This provided an opportunity to deeply understand BEYOND's brand philosophy of 'inspiration from nature' and 'sustainable beauty,' making the concept of sustainability more approachable.
In addition to this, upcycling booths where participants made keyrings and tea coasters from discarded sock remnants, knitting experience booths, and an LP music bar booth offered a variety of entertainment. On-site events also included raffles for vegan food coupons, beverages, and postcards for citizens who visited the BEYOND promotional booth, participated in experience programs, or completed surveys. A bottle recycling campaign further emphasized resource conservation, allowing participants to receive BEYOND product samples by submitting empty containers.
Participants who brought reusable lunchboxes or tumblers were also rewarded with event merchandise and sponsored items, further encouraging daily eco-friendly practices and promoting a culture of sustainable consumption.
Outdoor Film Screenings with Environmental Messages
A key highlight of the event was the outdoor screening of seven carefully selected environmental short films. These included 'Protecting Tiffany Blue 1837,' 'Good Luck to All,' 'Doraeji,' 'My Knitting Club,' 'Atacama Fashion Week,' 'Siko Kinngi Sanganaasug: The Sea That Will Not Freeze Again,' and 'Beyond 1.5.'
These films comprehensively addressed various environmental issues such as the climate crisis, biodiversity, resource circulation, and community. They offered audiences new perspectives and fostered deep empathy for environmental concerns, serving as an important platform to convey the seriousness of environmental problems while also delivering messages of hope and efforts towards solutions.
Fostering Environmental Awareness Through Everyday Actions
Jang Young-ja, programmer for the Seoul International Eco Film Festival, emphasized that 'environmental action doesn't require grand changes but can begin with small, everyday experiences.' She expressed hope that 'this Green Cinema Picnic provided an opportunity for citizens to slowly immerse themselves in nature and reflect on the value of coexisting with the environment.' Her statement underscored that environmental protection stems from small daily habits rather than extraordinary efforts.
The 23rd Seoul International Eco Film Festival will continue to engage audiences through its online screening platform until June 30, and plans to consistently provide a space for environmental empathy and action through diverse screenings and accompanying programs.
